MASSENA, N.Y. — A devastating fire claimed the lives of six family members in northern New York, including three children, officials reported.
The fire engulfed a single-family residence around 10 p.m. on Monday, with high winds playing a significant role in its rapid spread. This tragic incident occurred in Massena, a town located near the St. Lawrence River and the Canadian border.
Fire officials from both state and county departments are currently investigating the fire’s cause, which is believed to have originated in the kitchen.
A relative has identified the deceased as Diana Avery, Thomas Bowen, along with their three children: Joshuha Bowen, aged 14; Eli Bowen, aged 9; and Karmen Bowen, aged 6. Joseph Bowen, a family member, revealed that Avery was the homeowner and his mother, while Thomas was his brother.
Joseph Bowen shared about the family, saying, “My brother was a jack-of-all-trades, and his wife was the keeper of the children. They enjoyed camping, trips to the beach, and playing in the water.”
The grieving family expressed their gratitude to the community, particularly to the emergency responders and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, for their support during this tragic time.
“Though our hearts ache as we mourn the loss of our beloved family members, it is heartening to hear about the positive impact they had on this community,” the family stated in a message provided to local media. “Just like this tragedy, it is impossible to convey how deeply this has affected the community and the solidarity being shown.”
Massena Central School District Superintendent Ronald Burke addressed the school community, expressing sorrow over the loss of the three Bowen children, who were attendees at the junior high and elementary schools.
