DALLAS — In a compelling matchup on Wednesday, SMU emerged victorious over California with a score of 76-65. Chuck Harris led the Mustangs with a strong performance, netting 20 points. Matt Cross also made a significant impact, contributing 15 points along with 14 rebounds. B.J. Edwards rounded out the scoring efforts with 15 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, helping SMU improve its record to 16-5 overall and 7-3 in ACC play. Throughout the second half, the Golden Bears found themselves trailing by double digits for an extended period. However, they managed to cut the deficit to 61-55 with just under five minutes left on the clock. This reduction in points prompted a response from Harris, who executed a three-point play, allowing SMU to extend their lead to 67-55 with three and a half minutes remaining in the game.

Just when it looked like SMU was securely in control of the game, California’s Jeremiah Wilkinson made a critical 3-pointer, narrowing the Mushtangs’ lead to 69-62 with 2:25 left. Nevertheless, SMU retained their composure, sealing the game by converting five out of six free throw attempts in the closing minutes.

For California, Rytis Petraitis had a standout performance, posting 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremiah Wilkinson finished with 16 points, while Javon Blacksher Jr. contributed 13 points.

SMU’s offense initially faced challenges, experiencing a scoring drought that saw them fall behind 21-17. However, the Mustangs, known for their high-octane offense that boasts an average of 83.1 points per game, rallied in the latter part of the first half, scoring 22 points in the final six minutes to conclude the half ahead at 39-29.

Looking ahead, California will return home for a game against Syracuse on Saturday, while SMU is set to host Stanford in their next outing.
