SOUTH BEND, Ind. — In a thrilling matchup on Tuesday night, Markus Burton led the charge for Notre Dame with an impressive 26 points, while Braeden Shrewsberry contributed 15 points, propelling the Fighting Irish to a narrow 71-68 victory over Georgia Tech.
For the Yellow Jackets, Naithan George shone with 20 points, aided by Duncan Powell’s 18 points off the bench and Baye Ndongo, who chipped in 10 points.
With this victory, the Fighting Irish improved their record to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), having rebounded with three wins in their last four games following a challenging four-game losing streak.
Burton’s pivotal 3-pointer with just 1:49 left on the clock marked the moment Notre Dame took control of the game. This shot was part of a critical 13-0 scoring spree that began with 5:23 to go and culminated just 18 seconds from the end. The run featured noteworthy contributions from Shrewsberry, who also connected on a 3-pointer, and Burton, who sank back-to-back 3s.
Initially, it looked promising for Georgia Tech when George’s jump shot at the 5:35 mark put them ahead 62-55. However, their offense struggled to make further contributions until Lance Terry’s layup brought them to within four points, closing the gap at 68-64 with only 13 seconds left. Shrewsberry then secured the win by converting three of four free-throw attempts.
The first half concluded in a deadlock at 37 points for both teams, setting the stage for a competitive second half.
Georgia Tech, now with a record of 9-12 and 3-7 in the ACC, is facing tough times, having lost five of their last six games. They are scheduled to host No. 21 Louisville on Saturday. Meanwhile, Notre Dame will take to the road to challenge Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, on the same day.
This report has been amended to clarify that Notre Dame achieved a victory over Georgia Tech, not Wake Forest.
