Ex-Belgium star Radja Nainggolan implicated in cocaine trafficking investigation

Former Belgian international footballer Radja Nainggolan is facing serious charges related to his involvement in a criminal organization, as reported by the Brussels public prosecutor’s office on Tuesday. This legal action is part of an extensive investigation into cocaine trafficking operations. The 36-year-old Nainggolan has been released under certain conditions, although details regarding his next court appearance have not been provided.

The ongoing investigation centers around the alleged trafficking of cocaine imported from South America, which is believed to be facilitated through the port of Antwerp before being distributed throughout Belgium. The prosecutor’s office revealed that Nainggolan was arrested following a series of searches conducted by federal police in both the Antwerp province and the Brussels area. Along with Nainggolan’s arrest, police reported the seizure of approximately 2.7 kilograms (nearly 6 pounds) of cocaine, as well as a quantity of cash and luxury items. In total, sixteen individuals have been apprehended in connection with this case.

As of now, it is unclear whether Nainggolan has secured legal representation to navigate these charges and defend himself in court. Recently returning from a brief retirement, Nainggolan had signed with second-tier Belgian team Lokeren-Temse, making a notable comeback by scoring a goal directly from a corner kick during his debut last weekend.

Over the course of his career, Nainggolan has made 30 appearances for the Belgian national team but has not donned the national colors since March 2018. He spent a significant part of his professional journey in Italy, where he became well-known for his performances with clubs such as AS Roma and Inter Milan. His recent legal troubles add a new chapter to the life of a player who has made substantial contributions to Belgian football.
