HAIFA, Israel — A match in the Israeli soccer league was called off during halftime due to safety concerns after fans disrupted the event by throwing flares onto the field.

On Monday evening, Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv were evenly matched at 1-1, with the first half being marred by the dangerous antics of some home supporters who hurled fireworks, narrowly missing the players. Maccabi Tel Aviv had equalized during the first half, netting a penalty in the 15th minute of stoppage time at the end of the half.

Following discussions involving the local police chief, the referee, the match delegate, and representatives from both clubs, it was decided by the police to cancel the match due to concerns for the safety of everyone involved. Maccabi Tel Aviv released a statement reflecting this decision.

Reports from Israeli news sources indicated that Miki Zohar, the sports minister, had urged the police to halt the game. His comments highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “There is no point in holding such a sporting event amidst this intolerable violence.”

In the league standings, Maccabi Tel Aviv is currently positioned second, trailing by five points from the leaders, Hapoel Beer Sheva, whereas Maccabi Haifa holds the fourth position.
