Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupts lava once more

HONOLULU — One of the planet’s most dynamic volcanoes has reawakened.
Kilauea, located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has erupted once again, marking the seventh instance of volcanic activity in recent weeks.

The recent eruption began on December 23 at the summit crater of Kilauea and has experienced intermittent pauses. It resumed on Monday after small, sporadic fountains of lava began to erupt, which later escalated into “sustained fountaining,” according to reports from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The lava fountains on the northern side have reached heights between 100 and 120 feet (30 to 40 meters), contributing to several flowing streams of lava, as noted by the observatory. Additionally, a smaller fountain has been observed on the southern flank, with minimal lava flow emanating from it.

Subsequent episodes of activity since December 23 have generally lasted between 13 hours and eight days, with pauses varying in length from less than 24 hours to 12 days.
For the ongoing eruption, experts anticipate a duration of approximately 10 to 20 hours.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to the summits of two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Visitors can witness the eruption from various public viewing points across the park. Fortunately, the flowing lava poses no threat to residential areas or infrastructure.
