DALLAS — Klay Thompson made a strong impact early in the game, scoring 21 of his total 23 points in the opening quarter. He set a new record for the Mavericks by sinking seven 3-pointers during this stretch, leading to a comfortable victory over the struggling Washington Wizards, with a final score of 130-108 on Monday night.
Thompson’s performance matched the record previously held by Luka Doncic for most three-pointers made in a single quarter, a record set in February 2022. Doncic has been out of commission since suffering a left calf strain on Christmas Day. Notably, Thompson holds the record for the most three-pointers made in a quarter overall, with nine, achieved in January 2015 during his tenure with the Golden State Warriors.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper contributed significantly for the Mavericks, scoring 20 points to equal his career-high. The Mavericks (25-22) surged ahead at the start of the game with a 13-2 run and maintained a commanding 38-point lead by halftime.
For the Wizards (6-39), Bilal Coulibaly scored 16 points, but they concluded their six-game road trip with a 14th straight loss. The team has now lost 21 consecutive away games, following their initial road victory on October 28.
Thompson, returning from a two-game absence due to a sprained ankle, played only 24 minutes and was rested for the entire fourth quarter, as were most of the Mavericks’ starters.
Rookie center Alex Sarr had limited playing time for the Wizards, scoring four points and grabbing two rebounds in just 11 minutes due to soreness in his left ankle.
It was Thompson’s third time this season being the leading scorer for the Mavericks, with both Doncic and Kyrie Irving having missed the previous two games. Irving managed to put up 13 points during this match.
A highlight of the game was the NBA debut of Kylor Kelley, who played the last seven minutes. The 7-foot player scored one point and grabbed four rebounds; he was signed from the G League just a day earlier.
The Mavericks led at halftime 73-43, marking their largest lead at the break for this current season and also equaling the highest number of points the Wizards have allowed in the first half of a game.
Looking ahead, the Wizards will host the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, while the Mavericks will embark on a five-game road trip starting at New Orleans on the same day.
