After the Washington Commanders faced a significant defeat against Philadelphia in the NFC championship game, head coach Dan Quinn assured his players there would be ample time to review missed chances and analyze the team’s shortcomings.
Quinn emphasized the importance of acknowledging the camaraderie formed within the team. He noted that the Commanders had one of their most successful seasons in over 30 years, surpassing expectations by securing 14 victories, two of which occurred in the playoffs. Although the painful end came with a 55-23 loss to the Eagles, there’s a sense of optimism with franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels still playing on his rookie contract and plenty of salary cap flexibility for general manager Adam Peters to reshape the team into a strong contender.
Daniels expressed confidence in the foundation laid by Quinn and Peters, highlighting the culture and standard they have established within the organization. “Next year, we’re obviously going to have new guys come in and stuff like that, so we have to teach them the standard and uphold it,” Daniels stated.
The excitement surrounding Daniels plays a crucial role in the organization’s prospects, particularly given the team’s struggles that have marked more than two decades. As the second overall pick in the draft and a frontrunner for AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, Daniels has amassed a playoff-leading 822 passing yards and has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform well under pressure. Following a performance where he completed 29 out of 48 passes, including one touchdown but also an interception, Daniels expressed determination. “I don’t want to have a feeling like this again,” he remarked, emphasizing the need to learn from this season’s conclusion.
Looking ahead, the Commanders face significant decisions as only 34 players are currently under contract for 2025. Key contributors such as six-time All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner and tight end Zach Ertz, both 34, are among those set to enter free agency. Ertz, who led the team with 11 catches and 104 yards against the Eagles, credited Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury for attracting him to Washington, noting that the coaching staff has accelerated the team’s progress beyond expectations.
“It’s a testament to DQ and the environment he’s created in such a short time,” Ertz stated. “He brings energy every day and has surrounded himself with quality people who push us to excel.”
According to financial tracking services, the Commanders have over $87 million in salary cap space, ranking third in the league. This puts them in a strong position to attract new talent without the need to overextend financially.
In recent social media updates, co-owner Magic Johnson reflected on the revitalized atmosphere within the team, stating, “With a revitalized spirit in the locker room, transformative play on the field, and the resurgence of this brand, the Commanders are a team that players want to be a part of.”
Running back Austin Ekeler, who is under contract for another season, shared his pride in the growth the team has displayed, despite the disappointing finish. “I’m proud of the development we’ve had this year and the culture setting that’s definitely step one,” Ekeler commented, recognizing both the disappointment of the loss and pride in the accomplishments of the season.
