VERONA, Italy — Both Venezia and Verona continue to seek their inaugural victory of the season following a 1-1 draw in Serie A on Monday, a match that has left both clubs vying against relegation.
In his first start since being loaned from Napoli last year, Venezia winger Alessio Zerbin found the back of the net, scoring in the 28th minute. Although his initial shot was blocked, Zerbin reacted quickly, pouncing on the rebound to give his team the lead.
However, the visitors responded with resilience as Cameroon international Jackson Tchatchoua equalized for Verona just 14 minutes before the final whistle. Tchatchoua skillfully finished from close range after capitalizing on a rapid counterattack that unfolded down the right flank.
Following this match, Verona found itself fourth from the bottom of the standings, while Venezia lingered in second-to-last place, now just three points clear of Monza. Monza, unable to escape the bottom, suffered a defeat to Genoa, falling 2-0 in that matchup.
Monza faced a challenging game, but they could have fared worse if not for the standout efforts of goalkeeper Stefano Turati. Turati made a crucial save in the first half, denying Andrea Pinamonti from the penalty spot, which kept the match competitive.
Nevertheless, Monza’s defense proved to be vulnerable during aerial plays, and Genoa took full advantage in the second half. Koni De Winter opened the scoring for Genoa in the 61st minute, expertly heading in a cross that swung in from the left side. The onslaught continued, and just six minutes before the end of the match, Mexican Johan Vásquez added another goal, neatly glancing in a cross delivered from the right.
With this victory, Genoa climbed up to 11th place in the league standings, strengthening their campaign.
