SEC imposes $500,000 penalty on Vanderbilt for permitting fans to rush the court following win against Kentucky

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference has imposed a fine of $500,000 on Vanderbilt University following an incident where fans rushed the court after the Commodores’ 74-69 triumph against No. 9 Kentucky on Saturday.

This penalty marks Vanderbilt’s third infraction under the conference’s updated policy regarding access to competition areas. In accordance with the regulations, the fine will be directed to the University of Kentucky.

The first incidence leading to a penalty occurred back in October, when fans flooded the football field after a thrilling 40-35 victory over Alabama, resulting in a $100,000 fine. Subsequently, the second violation took place just a week ago when supporters stormed the court in celebration after defeating No. 6 Tennessee, attracting a much heftier penalty of $250,000.

According to the established protocol, subsequent violations could incur fines of up to $500,000, emphasizing the league’s commitment to maintaining order during competitive events.
