Commanders caution officials can ‘grant a touchdown’ following four penalties close to goal line in defeat to Eagles

PHILADELPHIA — In a surprising turn of events during the NFC championship game, the Washington Commanders were penalized four times in a rapid series of plays, all in an effort to thwart the Philadelphia Eagles’ infamous “tush push.” This series of infractions prompted the officiating crew to issue a stern warning: another similar penalty could result in an automatic touchdown for the Eagles.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, the Eagles found themselves in a favorable position with a first-and-goal scenario, aiming to extend their lead. The Commanders’ defensive lineman, Jonathan Allen, was first to be called for lining up in the neutral zone, marking the beginning of the penalties. Despite a temporary halt in the Eagles’ advance with a successful stop of quarterback Jalen Hurts, linebacker Frankie Luvu then jumped over the line on a second down, only to be flagged for encroachment. This sequence repeated itself when Luvu jumped again, resulting in yet another infraction; the Commanders were now facing a repeat second-and-goal attempt. On the bridge of further penalties, Allen again encroached on the play.

Seeing this pattern was becoming problematic, referee Shaun Hochuli intervened to address the situation. He informed the fans in attendance that if the Commanders continued this behavior, it could lead to an immediate scoring opportunity for the Eagles.

Following the game, Hochuli provided clarity on his stance regarding the penalties. He underscored that a team cannot repeatedly infringe upon rules to stave off a scoring opportunity. “Essentially, if No. 4 (Luvu) commits multiple jump penalties in a row, that situation calls for our warning,” he explained. “If this conduct is intended to prevent a potential score, we reserve the right to award that score.”

Fortunately for the Commanders, they managed to reset themselves and stayed onside for the next play, but Hurts exploited the situation perfectly, pushing through for a 1-yard touchdown, which widened the gap to 41-23 in favor of the Eagles.
