ERIE, Pa. — In an exhilarating match on Sunday, Bernie Blunt played a pivotal role in Mercyhurst’s triumph, scoring 27 points in an 85-80 double-overtime victory over LIU.
Blunt contributed not only with his scoring but also made three steals, showcasing his all-around performance for the Lakers, who now have a record of 10 wins and 13 losses, alongside a 4-4 standing in the Northeast Conference. Jeff Planutis was another standout for Mercyhurst, netting 23 points with impressive shooting stats: he went 8 for 15 overall, including 3 successful attempts out of 7 from beyond the arc, and also converted 4 out of 5 free throws. Planutis matched Blunt’s effort with three steals as well. Additionally, Aidan Reichert added 16 points, though his shooting was less efficient at 6 for 18, but he did make 4 out of 5 from the charity stripe.
On the other side of the court, Brent Davis led the scoring for the Sharks with 20 points, keeping LIU competitive.
