Authorities probing mistreatment of Premier League official Michael Oliver following Wolves-Arsenal game

LONDON — The organization overseeing match officials in English soccer has announced that police are looking into serious threats directed at Premier League referee Michael Oliver and his family that arose after the recent match between Wolverhampton and Arsenal.

Oliver officiated the game on Saturday at Molineux Stadium, where Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory, although both teams faced a player dismissal.

Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), which governs referees in the English league system, expressed its dismay over the situation, stating they were “appalled by the threats and abuse” that Oliver has faced since the match concluded.

The PGMOL emphasized, “No official should be subjected to any form of abuse, especially the horrifying attacks targeting Michael and his family over the last day.”

They confirmed that law enforcement has been notified, and inquiries into the matter have already begun. The organization pledged its support for Oliver and all others impacted, stating their commitment to addressing such unacceptable conduct.

This disturbing incident is not isolated, as the PGMOL pointed out that it has occurred previously, with officials facing similar threats in recent times.

During the Wolves-Arsenal match, one of the most controversial decisions made by Oliver was a straight red card issued to Arsenal’s left back, Myles Lewis-Skelly, for a foul just outside the Wolves’ penalty area.

This call was confirmed by the video assistant referee following a review, leading to Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, expressing his outrage, saying he was “absolutely fuming” about the decision.
