SALT LAKE CITY — In a decisive match on Saturday, Baylor took down Utah with a score of 76-61, led by Norchad Omier’s impressive performance, which included 22 points and 12 rebounds. V.J. Edgecombe contributed significantly as well, adding 21 points to the Bears’ total.
With just five minutes remaining in the game and the score at 61-53 in favor of the Bears, Baylor surged ahead, outscoring the Utes 9-2 in that critical stretch. Omier was pivotal during this time, scoring seven points that included two free throws, a jump shot, and a 3-pointer. Robert Wright, who ended the game with 14 points, showcased his proficiency from the line, going 6 for 6 in free throws during the last two minutes of the contest. Overall, Baylor dominated the crucial final moments, achieving a 15-8 advantage over Utah in the last 5 ½ minutes of play.
The Bears demonstrated strong performance at the free-throw line, converting 17 out of 20 attempts. Wright was flawless, hitting all of his 8 attempts, while Omier went 8 for 10. Edgecombe was the only other player from Baylor to take free throws, managing to score 1 out of 2 attempts. Despite facing injuries that limited the roster to just seven players, Baylor improved its record to 13-6 and 5-3 in the Big 12.
On the opposing side, Utah’s Ezra Ausar scored 19 points, while backup guard Miro Little had a commendable game with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Baylor initially found themselves trailing but rallied back with a nine-point streak that gave them their first lead at 13-11. Although Utah briefly reclaimed the lead with a three from Zach Keller, Baylor countered with a powerful 13-0 run, establishing control of the game.
Edgecombe was especially impactful, scoring 11 of the Bears’ last 12 points before halftime. Meanwhile, Mason Madsen provided a boost for Utah with a three-pointer and a layup, ensuring the Utes stayed within striking distance, ending the half at 38-31 in favor of Baylor. Edgecombe ended the first half with 14 points, shooting perfectly from beyond the arc.
Looking ahead, Utah is scheduled to host Cincinnati on Tuesday, while Baylor remains in Utah to face BYU the same day.
