Antony of Man United signs loan deal with Real Betis

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United’s winger Antony has officially sealed a loan transfer to Real Betis, where he will stay for the remainder of the season.

The Brazilian player was brought to United in 2022 from Ajax for a hefty fee of $95 million, with high hopes attached to his arrival. However, Antony’s time at Old Trafford has not gone as planned, as he has struggled to meet expectations, netting just 12 goals across 96 matches. This recent loan move could potentially set the stage for a permanent transfer in the upcoming offseason.

A statement from Manchester United reflected their sentiments, wishing Antony success in his new venture with Real Betis.

Antony’s departure may signal the start of a significant squad refresh under the guidance of new head coach Ruben Amorim. Reports suggest that teammate Alejandro Garnacho may also be drawing interest from other clubs during the midseason transfer window, as United aims to generate funds to acquire players that fit Amorim’s preferred wingback style.

Antony had a promising initiation with Manchester United, marking his debut with a goal in a 3-1 victory over Arsenal. He achieved significant successes with the club, including winning the English League Cup and the FA Cup over his two full seasons.

However, this current season has seen him primarily on the sidelines, featuring only 14 times and scoring just once—a goal against Barnsley in the League Cup, which is markedly lower than anticipated.
