HOUSTON — The potential for re-signing free agent Alex Bregman remains a topic of discussion for the Houston Astros, though general manager Dana Brown acknowledges it may be a challenging task. Speaking during the team’s FanFest, Brown elaborated on the situation surrounding Bregman, who has dedicated his entire nine-year career to the franchise.

Brown revealed that the organization did not anticipate Bregman being available at this stage of the offseason following trades and roster changes. “The interesting thing is when we made some trades and some moves this offseason, we never realized that Bregman would still be on the market at this time,” he stated. He confirmed that the team has had “some conversations” with Bregman, emphasizing that these discussions have been “positive.” When asked about the possibility of re-signing him, Brown described the opportunity as “cracked” open, indicating that while it is not guaranteed, there is still a chance.

Should the Astros manage to bring Bregman back into the fold, it would result in a congested infield. Recently, the team traded outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes and also signed first baseman Christian Walker. Brown mentioned that while the lineup is largely solidified, Bregman’s status as a free agent necessitates ongoing discussions.

On the day Walker was introduced as a new addition to the team, Brown stated that Walker would take over first base and Paredes would assume the third base position. However, he later clarified that if Bregman were to return, he would naturally reclaim the third base position. “I love watching Bregman play third base, so I can’t imagine him playing anywhere else,” Brown explained, praising Bregman’s skills and contributions on the field. With accolades like a Gold Glove award and two All-Star selections under his belt, Bregman’s talent is undeniable.

Astros’ manager Joe Espada has remained in contact with Bregman throughout the offseason. He acknowledges Bregman’s need for personal time while expressing his desire for him to stay in Houston long-term. “I tell him all the time … this is home,” Espada remarked, understanding the complexities Bregman faces in making decisions for his family.

The role of veteran second baseman Jose Altuve may also be impacted if Bregman returns. Although Altuve has spent his entire career playing at second base, the dynamics of the infield could prompt discussions about positional changes. Altuve previously expressed his support for Bregman to remain with the team, but Espada has yet to broach the topic of potential repositioning. “If we get to that point, I’m sure we’ll have that conversation,” he stated, underlining Altuve’s significance to the team.

For his part, Altuve has conveyed a willingness to adapt for the team’s success. “Alex is one of the best players in the whole league, so we want him to stay,” he noted. Although some speculate that Altuve might have to transition to an outfield position if Bregman returns, he seemed optimistic, insisting that for Bregman, challenges are easily overcome.

Reflecting on the uncertainty surrounding Bregman’s future, Altuve shared his mixed emotions. “I thought he’s going to be back for sure,” he stated, acknowledging his fluctuating expectations. “Now I’m like, OK, in the middle,” he added, indicating that the situation remains fluid as free agency develops.
