Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann sidelined for weeks due to foot injury

SINSHEIM, Germany — Hoffenheim’s goalkeeper, Oliver Baumann, has been sidelined for several weeks due to a foot injury.

On Saturday, Hoffenheim announced that Baumann sustained a tendon injury during their Europa League match at home against Tottenham.

Sporting director Andreas Schicker expressed his disappointment, stating, “This is a bitter setback for us all. Oli will not be able to help us on the pitch as captain in the near future, but thanks to his strong personality he will continue to play his usual significant role in the team and support the entire squad – especially in these challenging times.”

Before the 19th round of matches, Hoffenheim found themselves in 15th place in the 18-team Bundesliga, just above the relegation zone. They are set to face Eintracht Frankfurt at home on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Baumann represented Germany in two matches last year and was viewed as a viable option to step in for Alexander Nübel while Marc-André ter Stegen of Barcelona is recovering from a serious knee injury.
