LONDON — Emergency response teams initiated cleanup operations on Saturday following a powerful storm that produced record-setting winds, resulting in at least one fatality and leaving over a million people in Ireland and Scotland without electricity.

Efforts were focused on clearing numerous fallen trees obstructing roads and railways after Storm Éowyn, as designated by meteorological authorities, swept through the area.

In Ireland, strong winds caused significant structural damage, snapping telephone poles, dismantling an ice rink in Dublin, and even toppling a large wind turbine. The highest recorded wind gust reached 114 mph (183 kph) on the west coast, surpassing a long-standing record established in 1945.

Tragically, a young man named Kacper Dudek, aged 20, lost his life when a tree crashed onto his vehicle in County Donegal in northwest Ireland, as confirmed by local authorities.
