PARK CITY, Utah — The host of the upcoming Oscars, Conan O’Brien, has shared that he is currently unable to live in his own home due to the immense damage caused by wildfires in Los Angeles. He emphasized the importance of being sensitive to the situation faced by residents impacted by the fires.
“Everyone I know has felt the effects of this tragedy,” O’Brien remarked during an interview on Friday. “I’m displaced from my house; luckily, mine was spared as the flames got alarmingly close. However, we won’t be returning for quite some time. I consider myself fortunate, especially knowing so many individuals who have lost their homes.” He added that the show aims to honor the affected communities and highlight their struggles thoughtfully.
Recently, devastating wildfires have ravaged neighborhoods in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, resulting in thousands of residents losing their homes. Even those whose residences managed to survive are often currently unable to return due to smoke or other damages.
O’Brien was announced as the host for the 97th Academy Awards, which is scheduled to take place on March 2 in Los Angeles. The catastrophic fires have already caused the delay of the nominations announcement not once, but twice, with the final announcement taking place this past Thursday. “Emilia Pérez” has emerged as the frontrunner among the nominees.
This series of devastating events has disrupted Hollywood’s awards season, effectively turning it into an initiative focused on fundraising and support. There has been discussion regarding the possibility of canceling the Oscars; however, organizers are committed to evolving the show to create an experience that “unites us as a global film community and honors those who bravely battled the wildfires.”
O’Brien, a former host of “The Tonight Show,” made these comments at the premiere of his new film, “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” which features actress Rose Byrne alongside him.
