Travis Kelce admits he once envisioned himself as a quarterback like Josh Allen.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Currently, there are countless fans who would gladly trade places with Travis Kelce, a standout star in the NFL, celebrated for his contributions to the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. His prominence has landed him various opportunities, from television appearances to endorsements, and he is also in a relationship with one of the most popular pop icons globally.

However, when reminiscing about his childhood aspirations, Kelce reveals that he dreamed of emulating Josh Allen, the talented quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. He envisioned himself navigating the field as a quarterback, executing impressive plays both through the air and on the ground. Reality dictated a different path, leading to a crucial decision from a perceptive coach who transitioned him to the tight end position, where he has excelled and carved out a legacy as one of the greatest to ever play that role.

“Josh is who I used to dream of being like in the NFL,” Kelce remarked, addressing the media on the eve of the highly anticipated AFC championship game against Allen and the Bills at Arrowhead Stadium. The upcoming matchup, which promises to be an intense contest, has drawn significant attention.

Kelce described his admiration for Allen, saying, “Big, athletic quarterback. Big arm. Being able to be a dual-threat guy.” He expresses a deep respect for Allen, recognizing his leadership and pivotal role in driving the team forward. Kelce notes, “You can tell, he really took the bull by the horns and has been their leader upfront.”

The physical attributes of both athletes are strikingly similar; Kelce stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs around 250 pounds, making him the ideal size for a tight end, while Allen shares both height and a similar frame at 240 pounds. Both players also share a background of playing at colleges often overlooked in the spotlight: Kelce at Cincinnati and Allen at Wyoming. Their efforts have consistently kept their teams performing at a high level in the NFL.

The Chiefs have now made it to the AFC championship game for the seventh straight year. Meanwhile, the Bills return for their second appearance in five years, hoping to exact revenge for their previous defeat—a 38-24 loss at Arrowhead Stadium during the 2021 playoffs that led the Chiefs to their Super Bowl win.

While Kelce may not possess Allen’s remarkable throwing ability, he has showcased significant skill in his high school days. During his senior year at Cleveland Heights High School in Ohio, he threw for 1,523 yards and 15 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,016 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns.

Kelce has had a few opportunities to throw the ball during NFL games. In a 2020 game against the Raiders, he completed a 4-yard pass for a first down, followed by an incomplete pass the succeeding week against Tampa Bay. However, his creativity often shines through with off-script plays that highlight his improvisational skills. These moments can induce anxiety for Chiefs coach Andy Reid and his teammate Patrick Mahomes, but Kelce has earned the trust and freedom to take those risks.

“He does that in practice,” Mahomes chuckled, recognizing the nature of these adventurous plays. He acknowledged that it began as a lighthearted jest, but has evolved into a trusted option during critical moments. “As long as he completes it, Coach is going to keep letting him do it. But he knows the consequences if he doesn’t,” Mahomes added.

As Kelce gears up for the clash against the Bills, it is crucial that he sticks to a solid game plan, especially against a defense known for leading the NFL in turnover differential this season. Nevertheless, fans would welcome another stellar playoff showing like his performance against Houston in the divisional round, where he caught seven passes for 117 yards and scored a touchdown in their 23-14 win.

There have been whispers that Kelce may be past his prime following a season where he didn’t meet expectations, even though he still accrued impressive stats with 97 receptions for 823 yards. Critics suggested he was distracted by fame and his relationship with Taylor Swift, speculating it could be a sign of his decline.

Kelce, however, remained unfazed by the chatter, stating, “I laugh at it. It’s fine, man. As long as we’re going out there and winning, that’s all that matters.”
