ANKARA, Turkey — A search and rescue mission was initiated on Friday in central Turkey following the collapse of a four-story building that has left at least five individuals trapped inside, as reported by local authorities.

The incident took place in the city of Konya, located approximately 260 kilometers (around 160 miles) south of Ankara, the nation’s capital. The exact reasons for the building’s collapse remain unclear at this time. According to the private news agency DHA, two individuals were rescued from the debris but sustained injuries.

Governor Ibrahim Akin indicated that five family members are feared to still be caught within the wreckage. Emergency responders at the scene are employing sensitive acoustic devices to try and find potential survivors among the rubble, as per DHA’s coverage.

This tragic event transpired just three days after another catastrophic incident, where a fire consumed a 12-story hotel at a ski resort in northwestern Turkey, resulting in the deaths of 78 people.

Historically, the city of Konya has faced serious structural challenges; in 2004, a 12-story apartment building collapsed there, leading to the tragic deaths of 92 residents and injuring around 30 others. That event was attributed to structural deficiencies and negligence.
