Authorities in Greece announced on Friday that they have successfully disbanded a criminal organization suspected of misusing migrant healthcare identification numbers to distribute psychiatric medications and other prescription drugs unlawfully.

The police confirmed the apprehension of six people involved in the operation, which includes two pharmacists, a physician, an accountant, and two alleged accomplices. Additionally, there are ten more individuals, comprising other medical professionals and pharmacists, who are currently being sought for further interrogation.

This illicit group reportedly exploited social security numbers of foreign nationals without their consent to create over a thousand false prescriptions. These prescriptions were used to distribute medications to individuals abusing drugs through eight pharmacies in Athens connected to the scheme.

The arrested accountant is particularly notable as he is suspected of creating fictitious companies to collect personal information from foreign workers seeking job opportunities.

Throughout the investigation, authorities uncovered 1,016 forged prescriptions that involved almost 100,000 doses of various medications, including those prescribed for mental health conditions. The evidence confiscated during the raids included counterfeit insurance documents and work stamps, a firearm, ammunition, numerous papers, and a sum of 29,250 euros (approximately $30,750) in cash.

The individuals in custody now face a range of serious charges. These include involvement in a criminal enterprise, drug distribution, providing false certifications, multiple instances of fraud, forgery, unauthorized access to data, as well as violations pertaining to firearm and immigration regulations.
