Newark, N.J. — The New Jersey Devils have announced that goaltender Jacob Markstrom will be sidelined for a duration of 4 to 6 weeks due to a sprained MCL in his knee. The injury occurred during the second period of the Devils’ recent victory over the Bruins, where Boston’s Justin Brazeau collided with Markstrom.
In a team statement, the Devils confirmed, “Markstrom will miss the remainder of the club’s games leading into the Four Nations break. He will begin a rehab program under the guidance of the Devils’ athlete care staff.” As it stands, Markstrom holds a record of 21 wins, 9 losses, and 5 overtime losses, along with a goals-against average of 2.20, a save percentage of .912, and three shutouts, having played in 36 games this season for New Jersey (27-17-6). The team currently ranks third in the Metropolitan Division, trailing behind the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes.
Markstrom’s participation in the upcoming Four Nations Face-Off is uncertain. He was named as one of three goaltenders on Sweden’s roster for this tournament, which is set to take place from February 12 to 20 in Montreal’s Bell Centre and Boston’s TD Garden.
In the meantime, Jake Allen is anticipated to carry the bulk of the goaltending duties for New Jersey during Markstrom’s recovery. Allen has made 14 starts for the Devils this season, but only two of those have come since January 1. He stepped in for Markstrom during Wednesday’s game against Boston.
Additionally, the Devils have called up goalie Isaac Poulter from their AHL affiliate in Utica. The 23-year-old Poulter has yet to make his NHL debut.
Looking ahead, Allen is expected to take the starting position when the Devils face off against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
