Calvin Jones, prominent Nebraska running back and Super Bowl champion with Green Bay, passes away at 54

OMAHA, Neb. — Calvin Jones, a prolific rushers who amassed over 3,000 yards during his three-year tenure at the University of Nebraska and was part of the Green Bay Packers’ Super Bowl victory in 1997, has passed away at the age of 54.

Authorities reported that Jones’ body was discovered in the basement of a residence in north Omaha on Wednesday evening. The officials are yet to establish a confirmed cause of death, awaiting results from an autopsy.

A close acquaintance of Jones, Jo Dusatko, shared with local media that carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected in his death. Dusatko stated that the home’s heating system was malfunctioning and that Jones had been operating a generator in the basement.

Before making his mark at Nebraska, Jones earned All-American honors while playing at Central High School. At the university, he tallied 3,166 rushing yards and scored 40 touchdowns, eventually earning All-Big Eight accolades during the 1992-1993 seasons.

Teaming up with fellow player Derek Brown, they became known as the “We-Backs,” which referenced the Cornhuskers’ I-back position, with Jones serving as Brown’s backup during the 1991 season. That year, Jones had a standout performance, setting a Big Eight freshman record with 294 rushing yards, achieved on 27 carries, along with a school-record six touchdown runs, in a decisive 59-23 win against Kansas. This remarkable rushing feat ranks as the second highest in Nebraska’s history for a single game.

Jones entered the NFL draft in 1994, getting selected in the third round by the Los Angeles Raiders. Throughout his two seasons with the team, he participated in a total of 15 games, accumulating 27 carries for a total of 112 yards alongside 6 yards from two receptions. Although he was on the Packers’ roster during their Super Bowl winning season in 1996, he did not record any rushing attempts in the single game he played.
