Germany’s National Soccer Coach Julain Nagelsmann Extends Contract Until 2028

LEIPZIG, Germany — Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach of the German national soccer team, has recently signed a contract extension that will keep him in the role for an additional two years, running through the upcoming European Championship in 2028. This decision comes as a significant move, considering his previous contract was set to expire after the World Cup scheduled for next year in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

In a statement following the announcement, Nagelsmann expressed his excitement about the direction the team is heading. “Together with the fans, the team, and my coaching staff, we have developed something really special that we now aim to foster and enhance further,” he remarked. “Our goal is to secure titles together.” Under Nagelsmann’s leadership, Germany has achieved 11 victories out of 19 matches, and the team is currently on a six-match unbeaten streak, gearing up for a crucial encounter against Italy in the Nations League quarterfinals in March.

Nagelsmann stepped into the role of Germany’s head coach in September 2023, initially planning for a short-term tenure leading up to the Euros. During last year’s European Championship, the national squad progressed to the quarterfinals but ultimately faced elimination at the hands of Spain, the tournament’s future champion. Following that event, many anticipated that Nagelsmann would return to club football, possibly taking on a top club position; however, he surprised many by opting to extend his contract until the 2026 World Cup.

Reflecting on his journey in 2023, Nagelsmann shared his initial uncertainties about remaining as a national team coach beyond the home Euro. “Our primary aim was to achieve success in that tournament. However, I never anticipated just how impactful the national team is for the people in Germany, or the profound emotional connection it creates,” he explained. He went on to highlight the positive reception from fans and the community, remarking on how it has contributed to a sense of unity and determination regarding their progress as a team. “The incredible support and encouragement that the team, along with myself, receive is an affirmation that we are indeed on the right path, and our journey is far from over,” he concluded.
