Portland, Oregon — Max Mackinnon had a remarkable performance, scoring 43 points, which ties the school record for the most points in a single game, as Portland triumphed over San Diego with a score of 92-82 on Thursday evening.
In doing so, Mackinnon became the fifth player from the West Coast Conference to achieve the feat of scoring 43 points or more during a game in the past decade, making him the first to do so since 2022.
Throughout the game, Mackinnon demonstrated exceptional shooting accuracy, landing 7 of 9 attempts from three-point range and converting 18 of 22 at the free-throw line for the Pilots, who now hold a record of 7 wins and 14 losses overall, with a conference record of 2 wins and 6 losses. Supporting him, Chris Austin added 20 points to the team’s total. Austin Rapp contributed 17 points despite going 6 for 17 on shooting and 3 for 11 from long range, while also grabbing eight rebounds.
For San Diego, Kody Clouet led the effort with 19 points. Meanwhile, Tony Duckett contributed 14 points, and Deven Dahlke chipped in with 10 points. Unfortunately for the Toreros, this defeat marked their seventh consecutive loss, leaving them with a record of 4 wins and 17 losses and a conference record of 1 win and 7 losses.
Mackinnon’s impressive first-half performance included 23 points, helping Portland to a narrow lead of 42-37 at halftime.
Both teams are set to play again on Saturday; Portland will host Gonzaga while San Diego travels to face San Francisco.
