CNN is set to reduce its workforce by approximately 200 employees as part of a restructuring plan introduced on Thursday, aiming to guide the organization toward a more digital future.
The CEO of CNN, Mark Thompson, indicated that while there will be job losses within the television division, these cuts could be balanced out by new positions created to support digital initiatives, including various subscription offerings.
Thompson has been hinting at this directional shift since he assumed leadership over a year ago, particularly in response to a decline in the network’s viewership, which intensified following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.
“Our aim is straightforward: to realign CNN’s focus towards the channels and services that are attracting our audience,” stated Thompson in a communication directed to CNN employees.
He elaborated that the intention is to facilitate a platform for digital subscribers, allowing them to stream news content seamlessly on their devices. To support these new strategies, CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, will contribute $70 million.
Additionally, CNN is expected to reveal modifications to its television schedule soon, with reports suggesting that Wolf Blitzer may be transitioned to a morning news program.
