Amid Wemby Week festivities in Paris, the Spurs phenom is managing it all with noticeable grace.

Victor Wembanyama’s journey in Paris has been packed with activities aimed at connecting with his San Antonio Spurs teammates and showcasing the vibrant culture of his hometown. He arranged a shopping excursion followed by a team dinner on Monday, opened two outdoor courts in his city, and participated in Fashion Week appearances on Tuesday. Additionally, he is set to attend the UEFA Champions League match featuring Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City on Wednesday.

In the midst of all this excitement, basketball naturally remains at the forefront. Wembanyama, a phenomenal talent and the local hero, has effortlessly assumed various roles during this week’s events, reminding everyone that he recently celebrated his 21st birthday.

“He has a strong grounding in everything that comes his way,” remarked acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson. “He wants to succeed because he’s clear about his aspirations. His approach reflects well on him and his family, showcasing his mature and humble nature.”

The official activities kick off on Thursday when Wembanyama and the Spurs face off against the Indiana Pacers in Paris for the first of two games. They will meet again on Saturday, both contests being held at the Accor Arena, a location where Wembanyama competed during the Paris Olympics last summer. In that event, he played a significant role but faced defeat against the U.S. team in the gold medal match.

“It’s wonderful to be back here. This place holds a special meaning for me,” Wembanyama stated.

As a prominent player, Wembanyama undoubtedly impresses his teammates; however, he took it a step further by creating a memorable experience for the Spurs upon their arrival in France. He organized a shopping trip and dinner, stepping up as both a host and a tour guide.

Had Spurs coach Gregg Popovich traveled with the team, Wembanyama might have chosen not to take on the responsibility of organizing the meal. However, with Popovich unable to join due to health concerns, Wembanyama aimed to make his teammates feel welcomed.

“Pop had a plan in mind, as I know he would have done similar things,” Wembanyama explained. “I wanted to show them a warm welcome on their first day. Understanding their backgrounds not only helps me connect with them better but also honors their experiences as valuable individuals. It’s an opportunity to share these moments together.”

On Thursday, there will be no more exploration or socializing; Wembanyama will be focused solely on the game, as he typically is on game days. Following the initial matchup, there is a visit to the Eiffel Tower planned for the Spurs on Friday, which Wembanyama has experienced before. Another game against the Pacers is scheduled for Saturday, with the team returning to the U.S. on Sunday.

Spurs guard Chris Paul reflected on the uniqueness of the experience, saying, “Seeing Wembanyama’s dedication each day, learning about him, and understanding who he is makes for a special journey. His humility and work ethic shine through, especially when he plays near his family and friends who have supported him.”

Wembanyama’s fantastic season has put him in contention for his first All-Star Game selection, with starters being announced soon and reserves dubbed later in the month. He has been making a significant impact, averaging 24.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and leading the league with an impressive 4.0 blocked shots per game. Such statistics have not been seen in the league since Hakeem Olajuwon’s performance back in the 1992-93 season.

Overall, there is strong consensus among observers that Wembanyama’s potential is just beginning to unfold.

“If I were to make a wager, I’d definitely bet on him,” Paul declared. “And I truly mean that.”
