White Sox and Martín Pérez reach agreement on $5 million, one-year deal

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have officially signed veteran left-handed pitcher Martín Pérez to a one-year contract worth $5 million, which also features a mutual option for the 2026 season.
The agreement, reached about two weeks ago, was made public by the team on Tuesday. To accommodate Pérez on their 40-man roster, the White Sox designated right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio for assignment.

At 33 years old, Pérez commenced his major league career with the Texas Rangers in 2012. He earned an All-Star selection in 2022 and played a pivotal role in helping the Rangers secure the World Series title in 2023.

Last season, Pérez pitched for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres, achieving a record of 5-6 with an earned run average (ERA) of 4.53 over the course of 26 starts. Across his career, he has an overall record of 90 wins and 87 losses, with a 4.44 ERA in 314 games, including 269 starts.

During the previous season, Pérez was sidelined for a month due to a left groin strain, being placed on the injured list from May 28 to June 28. In one of his last outings for Pittsburgh, he impressively pitched six scoreless innings before being traded to San Diego on July 30.

He concluded the season on a high note with the Padres, finishing with a 3-1 record and a 3.46 ERA in his last ten starts, although he did not make an appearance during the playoffs, as San Diego was eliminated by the Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

Marinaccio, the pitcher designated to make room for Pérez, appeared in 16 games for the New York Yankees last year, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.86 ERA. The White Sox claimed him off waivers on September 23.

The White Sox are keen to bounce back from a dismal 2024 season, where they recorded a staggering 41-121 record, marking the highest number of losses in a major league season since 1900.
