PARIS — The soccer community was taken aback by Erling Haaland’s recent contract extension with Manchester City.
This surprise suits him perfectly.
“Of course it’s a bit unusual and it’s not normal. But it’s something I like. In the end it was an easy choice,” Haaland expressed on Tuesday. “I feel so happy, my family is so happy, and in the end, that’s what I really wanted.”
This contract marks one of the most lucrative deals in the sport, extending for a remarkable 10 years from the start of the current season. The 24-year-old striker from Norway has made a significant impact since his transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, netting 111 goals in just 125 appearances for Manchester City.
With his contract lasting until 2034, it stands as the longest in Premier League history, with reports suggesting that Haaland earns approximately £500,000 (around $600,000) weekly.
The enormity of this contract likely restricts the chances of him moving to an even larger club like Barcelona or Real Madrid in the years ahead, unless clubs are willing to meet the financial demands.
Yet, Haaland seems content with his path.
“I really look forward to spending many more years in Manchester. It’s going to be amazing,” he stated ahead of City’s important Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
Haaland elaborated, saying, “First of all, as I said, it was the feeling I had, and the people I spoke with made me convinced this was the right choice.” He expressed optimism that City has overcome recent struggles, stating, “I feel like a really positive energy in the club; it’s been a hard period, and everyone knows that. I think we’re over that now.”
His lucrative deal arrives at a time when Manchester City is awaiting a ruling following allegations of 115 breaches related to the Premier League’s financial regulations. Potential penalties could include points deductions or even relegation from England’s top tier.
However, these issues didn’t factor into Haaland’s decision.
“I haven’t thought of that or anything,” he remarked confidently. “I’m confident the club knows what they’re doing.”
Throughout his career, Haaland has been subjected to tough tackles from defenders trying, often in vain, to contain him.
He has developed strategies to maintain his edge.
“I started measuring my sleep to make sure I slept really well,” he explained. “It’s true, I did.”
