LONDON — Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek have been honored with the International Tennis Federation’s world champion awards for 2024.
Swiatek narrowly claimed the women’s singles award, outperforming Aryna Sabalenka in the announcement made by the ITF on Monday.
Her remarkable season included a victory at the French Open, as well as four titles in the WTA 1000 series. She also secured a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics and played a significant role in steering Poland to the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup. Meanwhile, Sabalenka captured championships at both the Australian Open and U.S. Open, finishing the year as the world No. 1.
On the men’s side, Sinner made history by becoming the first Italian to receive the award. He ended 2024 ranked No. 1, boasting an impressive record of 73 wins against just six losses. His achievements included winning the Australian and U.S. Open titles, capturing the ATP Finals title, and leading Italy to defend their Davis Cup title successfully.
It is noteworthy that both Sinner and Swiatek faced doping allegations last year, a situation that has cast a shadow over their participation in the ongoing Australian Open.
The ITF clarified that the criteria for selecting the world champions were based on “objective criteria,” taking all results into account, particularly focusing on Grand Slam tournaments, the World Cup of Tennis competitions, and Olympic and Paralympic events.
“Last year was unforgettable for our sport, featuring the Olympic and Paralympic Games along with our traditional team events,” stated ITF President David Haggerty. “We see that many of our award winners drew inspiration from representing their countries, leading to their remarkable accomplishments in 2024.”
