CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — In a remarkable display of talent, Federica Brignone and Sofia Goggia achieved a one-two finish for Italy in the World Cup events held on the preparation grounds for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics. Brignone secured a commanding victory in the super-G event on Sunday, while Goggia had already triumphed in the downhill race a day prior, where Brignone finished third.

Lindsey Vonn faced challenges once again, experiencing a fall midway through her run on the Olympia delle Tofane course, a slope where she boasts a remarkable 12 victories. Despite her tumble, the 40-year-old skier, who made a comeback to the circuit last month with a new titanium knee after almost six years of retirement, managed to avoid serious injury and quickly got back on her feet.

Brignone’s performance was impressive, finishing 0.58 seconds ahead of Lara Gut-Behrami, the Olympic super-G champion, and 1.08 seconds ahead of Corinne Suter, the Olympic downhill champion. “I pressed down on the gas pedal the entire way down,” Brignone remarked, underscoring her aggressive approach to the race.

Both Brignone and Goggia are positioning themselves as formidable contenders against Swiss rivals Gut-Behrami and Suter as they prepare for the 2026 Winter Games, where women’s skiing competitions will take place in Cortina and the men’s events in Bormio. Goggia, who finished seventh in the super-G, mentioned, “Things change year to year and can also change day to day. But these are super positive signs.”

Additionally, Brignone’s victory has expanded her lead in the overall standings, solidifying her status in the competition. Vonn shared her intentions earlier in the week, stating that she plans to retire again following next year’s Olympic Games, marking another chapter in her distinguished career.
