ATLANTA — Charles Jagusah faced a challenging setback when a torn right pectoralis muscle during training camp dashed his ambitions of starting as Notre Dame’s left tackle for the season. Many would have lost faith in a comeback, but Jagusah remained determined to return.
To have a chance to be part of the action in the national championship, the Fighting Irish needed to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff. With that goal achieved, Jagusah could potentially make his first start of the season in the upcoming championship match against Ohio State.
His journey back has inspired both his teammates and the coaching staff. It may also play a crucial role in strengthening Notre Dame’s offensive line as they prepare to face the formidable Buckeye defense.
“When the injury occurred, the initial questions revolved around its severity and recovery time,” offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock stated. “We wanted to know if there was a chance he could contribute again this season. Watching him commit daily to his recovery, both on the sidelines and during meetings, was truly remarkable.”
Jagusah, who stands 6 feet 7 inches and weighs 330 pounds, acknowledged the pivotal role his teammates played in his journey back to the field. Their encouragement was instrumental in keeping him motivated to prepare for the season. “Everyone kept pushing me to prepare as if my number would be called,” Jagusah said. “Having such hardworking teammates is a blessing, and I’m fortunate to be part of this team.”
In the Orange Bowl semifinal against Penn State, Jagusah stepped in as a backup when Rocco Spindler, the right guard, suffered a sprained ankle. With left tackle Anthonie Knapp also sidelined with a high ankle sprain, coach Marcus Freeman officially ruled him out for the national championship.
If called upon, this would mark Jagusah’s second career start, the first being in the Sun Bowl victory over Oregon State last season. Although Notre Dame has yet to finalize its starting offensive line, Jagusah expressed uncertainty about whether he will play tackle or guard.
