BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox and their All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran reached a mutual agreement on Friday, finalizing a one-year contract that prevents any arbitration disputes. This deal is worth a guaranteed $3.85 million and includes a team option for the 2026 season valued at $8 million.
In the current arrangement, Duran will earn a salary of $3.75 million for this season, with a provision for a $100,000 buyout attached to the team option. The terms dictate that the option’s value could increase based on Duran’s performance in the Most Valuable Player (MVP) voting. If he secures a spot among the top 20 MVP candidates, the option rises to $9 million. Should he finish within the top 10, it escalates to $10 million; top five results yield an $11 million option, and winning the MVP award would boost it to $12 million. However, if he does not rank in the top 20 yet receives a selection for the second team All-MLB, the option would be set at $8.5 million.
Duran also has the opportunity to earn up to $150,000 in performance bonuses this year, which are based on his plate appearances. Specifically, he can earn $50,000 for reaching 450, 500, and 550 plate appearances each.
If a trade occurs, the option attached to his contract would be nullified, and the acquiring team would owe him a $100,000 assignment bonus.
Having entered the arbitration process for the first time, Duran initially sought a salary increase from $760,000 to $4 million, while the Red Sox offered $3.5 million during negotiations last week. Last season, Duran significantly impressed, finishing eighth in MVP voting after posting a batting average of .285 along with 21 home runs, 75 RBIs, 34 stolen bases, 48 doubles, and scoring 111 runs.
Currently, there are still fifteen players within the organization who are facing potential arbitration hearings.
