MIAMI — Authorities in Miami have disclosed the identity of a man who is alleged to have killed two homeless individuals and injured two others during a seemingly random attack.

Brenton Clarke, a 36-year-old resident from Inwood, New York, was apprehended shortly after the incident, which occurred early Thursday morning. Although he has no prior arrests in Miami, officials noted that Clarke has a record of minor offenses in New York.

The police received an emergency call just after 6 a.m. reporting that a man in his 30s was attacking individuals living on the streets with a stick. Upon their arrival, officers found that two victims had died at the scene, while the other two were rushed to a local trauma center for medical attention. Investigators are currently working to uncover the reasons behind the violent outburst.

Miami Police Chief Manny Morales shared details with reporters, stating that Clarke’s first victim was a man near a downtown train station. He then proceeded to assault another homeless individual before attacking a couple across the street.

Responding officers were on the scene “within seconds” of the emergency call, as reported by Morales. They apprehended Clarke as he attempted to flee after the assaults.

“This is a tragic situation,” Morales said, expressing the dismay felt by officers and the department over such senseless violence.

Clarke is currently being held without bond at the Miami-Dade jail. He faces serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and armed robbery with a deadly weapon. As of now, court records do not show an attorney representing Clarke, and the Miami-Dade public defender’s office has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this case.
