On Friday, the Italian government convened to address the situation of an Italian citizen apprehended in Venezuela two months ago without facing formal charges, according to a statement from the premier’s office.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, along with the Italian Embassy in Caracas, has been diligently monitoring the case of Alberto Trentini. The 45-year-old worker for a non-governmental organization has gone missing to his family and friends since his detention.

The statement emphasized that officials are exploring all viable options to achieve a favorable and swift resolution to the situation. Furthermore, they urged the media to exercise utmost discretion, as this could positively influence the outcome of the case.

Among those present at the meeting were Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, State Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, and leading intelligence personnel.

During the discussions, Minister Tajani reached out to Trentini’s mother via phone to convey the government’s support and reassure her of the institutions’ commitment to her son’s case.

In recent developments, Italy took a diplomatic step by summoning the Venezuelan ambassador in Rome last week to express its discontent with the lack of information regarding Trentini’s condition.

Trentini’s detention occurred in November, coinciding with the decline of relations between Italy and Venezuela. This rift has been exacerbated by Italy’s refusal, along with that of several nations, to acknowledge Nicolás Maduro’s victory in the presidential elections held in July 2024, which they deemed illegitimate.
