WARSAW, Poland — A man has been sentenced to life in prison following his conviction for the rape, robbery, and murder of a Belarusian woman in Warsaw. The Polish Regional Court delivered the verdict on Friday, stating that the convicted individual would also be required to undergo therapy during his imprisonment.
During the trial, the court identified the assailant, referred to as Dorian S., who was charged with the brutal attack on Lizaveta Hertsen in February. The horrific incident occurred in a busy area of downtown Warsaw, where Hertsen was found unconscious and exposed by a janitor on the morning of February 25.
The victim, only 25 years old, succumbed to her injuries in a hospital on March 1 and was later laid to rest in a Warsaw cemetery. Having emigrated from Belarus a few years earlier, Hertsen had settled in Warsaw, a city that has increasingly become a refuge for many Belarusians escaping political turmoil and for Ukrainians fleeing the ravages of war.
At the time of the assault, the perpetrator was just 23 years old and was apprehended on the day of the crime. The court found that he approached Hertsen from behind, threatened her with a knife, sexually assaulted her, and ultimately robbed her.
The shocking nature of the crime has unsettled the community, as Warsaw is widely regarded as a safe city. Despite the conviction, the verdict remains open to appeal.
