In Panama City, the president of the Panamanian soccer federation has been suspended by FIFA for making derogatory remarks about a prominent player on the women’s national team. Manuel Arias referred to midfielder Marta Cox as “fat” after she criticized the conditions surrounding the national team’s preparation for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in 2023.
The Panamanian soccer federation confirmed that Arias would be barred from participating in soccer-related activities until July 14, 2025. As a result, he will be absent from several key matches involving the men’s national team in the CONCACAF region, which includes Nations League games slated for March, two qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup in June, and the Gold Cup, set to take place in the United States from June 14 to July 6. Notably, Panama reached the final of the men’s Gold Cup earlier this summer, ultimately finishing second to Mexico.
In a statement on social media, Arias expressed regret for his remarks, stating that the language he used was “unfortunate.” He acknowledged that such words are inappropriate and should not have been uttered.
During Arias’s suspension, vice president Fernando Arce will take over as the interim leader of the federation. The organization emphasized its commitment to improving conditions and support within women’s soccer in the nation.
Marta Cox, who recently joined Turkish club Fenerbahce after a stint with the Mexican team Xolos, previously made her mark by scoring in a group stage match against France during the Women’s World Cup, despite the team suffering a 6-3 defeat.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges within the sport and the need for sensitivity and accountability from leaders in the soccer community as they promote a more respectful environment for athletes.
