Jorge Fossati dismissed as head coach of Peru’s men’s national soccer team

LIMA, Peru — On Thursday, the Peruvian soccer federation announced that Jorge Fossati has stepped down as the head coach of the men’s national soccer team. During his tenure, the 72-year-old Uruguayan coach oversaw a challenging qualifying campaign for the World Cup, in which the team managed to secure only one victory in six matches.

The federation indicated that Fossati’s departure was a result of a “mutual agreement.” As of now, the federation has not disclosed who will succeed him in the coaching role.

Currently, Peru finds itself at the bottom of the South American qualifying standings for the 2026 World Cup, sitting in the 10th position with just seven points. In this format, the top six teams will gain automatic entry into the upcoming tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, while the seventh-place team will enter a playoff for a chance to qualify.

Fossati was appointed in December 2023, taking over from Juan Reynoso. With a coaching background that includes stints with teams in both Uruguay and Qatar, Fossati has a respected history in club soccer, where he has secured numerous titles with celebrated clubs such as Peñarol in Uruguay, Liga de Quito in Ecuador, Al Sadd in Qatar, and Cerro Porteño in Paraguay.
