MELBOURNE, Australia — Danielle Collins engaged with a rowdy crowd during her Australian Open match on Thursday evening after defeating a local competitor, stirring up a lively atmosphere as she responded to the boos by blowing kisses and exclaiming, “How about that?!”

The 10th-seeded American, who was the runner-up in the 2022 finals against Australia’s Ash Barty, triumphed over Destanee Aiava with a score of 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2 in a match that lasted nearly two and a half hours. The excitement escalated after the match as Collins, 31, who initially considered retiring at the end of last season but has opted to play through 2025, playfully addressed the crowd at Kia Arena.

During the match, Collins cupped her hand to her ear while looking toward the audience, repeatedly using her now-famous phrase. As the crowd’s jeers grew louder, she responded with playful kisses toward the spectators, showcasing her unshakeable spirit.

In her post-match press conference, Collins acknowledged the mixed reception, stating, “The people that don’t like you, and the people that hate you, they actually pay your bills. My professional career is not going to last forever,” adding that the money “paid for tickets” helps support her career. She even joked about planning a lavish vacation and her fondness for yachts, prompting laughter from the media.

While addressing the audience during her customary interview, Collins was momentarily drowned out by cheers and boos. She took the interruption in stride, flashing a smile before mentioning, “As long as I’m out here, I might as well take that big fat check.” Showing her genuine appreciation, she added, “Thank you for coming out here and supporting us tonight.”

Collins briefly discussed her next match against fellow American Madison Keys, the 19th seed and a former finalist at the 2017 U.S. Open, before returning to the crowd, vocalizing her gratitude: “Thanks, everyone. Thank you, guys. Love ya!”

Destanee Aiava, ranked 195th, put up a strong fight in the match, having qualified to compete in the main draw. Collins remarked, “I wasn’t super surprised by how Destanee was playing. I just had to … do everything I can.”

Originally from Florida and a former athlete at the University of Virginia, Collins has not shied away from the spotlight, evidenced by her controversial exchange with Iga Swiatek at the Paris Olympics last August. Reflecting on the charged atmosphere from the crowd on Thursday, she shared, “I loved it. I’ve been doing this my whole life. I love playing (in front of) a crowd that has energy, regardless of which side they’re on. It kind of motivates me more.”
