Los Angeles is set for a new direction as Mark Parsons has been officially appointed as the sporting director and general manager for Angel City, a prominent team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Parsons takes over the position from Angela Hucles Mangano, who decided to part ways with the organization in December. Hucles Mangano has since aligned herself with the Houston Dash.
One of Parsons’ immediate responsibilities will be the recruitment of a new head coach. This comes in the wake of the dismissal of Becki Tweed, who was let go after a tough season that resulted in a 7-13-6 record.
Julie Uhrman, co-founder and president of Angel City, expressed positive sentiments regarding Parsons’ hiring, stating, “Mark brings exceptional experience in the domestic and global game.” She added that as the team prepares for the 2025 season and the opening of a cutting-edge 50,000-square-foot performance center, he will play a vital role in leading sporting operations and shaping the team’s culture and championship goals.
Before his tenure with Angel City, Parsons was head coach of the Washington Spirit for two years from 2013 to 2015. He then joined the Portland Thorns, where for six years he not only built a strong team but also secured an NWSL championship in 2017.
Parsons transitioned to coach the Netherlands national team in late 2021; however, his stint was cut short after the team faced elimination in the quarterfinals of the Women’s European Championship. He briefly returned to the Spirit for a season in 2022 before this new opportunity with Angel City.
