The Tennessee Titans are actively engaging in the second round of interviews for their general manager position as of Wednesday. The team has brought in two prominent assistant general managers for discussions: Ian Cunningham from the Chicago Bears and Mike Borgonzi from the Kansas City Chiefs.
This search for a new general manager follows the dismissal of Ran Carthon last week after the franchise recorded a disappointing 9-25 record during his two seasons in charge. Chad Brinker, the team’s president of football operations, is leading the search, which initiated with three days of virtual interviews involving ten candidates.
The Titans are scheduled to conduct interviews with two additional candidates on Thursday. Presently, they hold the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, which adds urgency to their hiring process.
Both Borgonzi and Cunningham previously participated in virtual interviews on Sunday. The Titans kicked off their second round of in-person interviews on Tuesday, meeting with Ed Dodds, the assistant general manager of the Colts, and Terrance Gray, who serves as the director of player personnel for the Buffalo Bills.
Borgonzi, who has been in his role under general manager Brett Veach since 2021, has also interviewed for the general manager position with the New York Jets. He oversees the team’s scouting operations for both college and professional players, playing a significant role in roster construction.
A former college fullback at Brown University, Borgonzi has held various positions since joining the Chiefs in 2009. His most recent role before becoming assistant general manager was the director of football operations, a position he held for three years before his promotion.
On the other hand, Cunningham had previously been considered for this job two years prior when the Titans appointed Carthon. The Bears established the assistant general manager role in 2022 to recruit Cunningham, who transitioned to Chicago after spending five years with the Philadelphia Eagles. There, he advanced from director of college scouting in 2017 to assistant director of player personnel in 2019, and then to director of player personnel in 2021.
Cunningham began his career in the NFL as a player personnel assistant with the Baltimore Ravens in 2008, later advancing to area scout in 2013. He celebrated Super Bowl victories with both the Ravens during the 2012 season and the Eagles in 2017. An undrafted free agent, he played as an offensive lineman at the University of Virginia and was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008.
