The Indianapolis Colts are set to participate in the inaugural regular-season NFL game in Berlin, marking a significant milestone for the league. The NFL revealed on Wednesday that this highly anticipated matchup will take place at Olympic Stadium in 2025. However, the details about the Colts’ opponent and the specific date for the game will be announced at a later time.
This event follows the NFL’s first regular-season game in Germany, which occurred in 2022 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers squared off against the Seattle Seahawks in Munich. The league has a history of engaging with German fans, having hosted five American Bowl games at the Olympic Stadium between 1990 and 1994, and was home to NFL Europe’s Berlin Thunder from 2003 to 2007.
According to NFL Germany’s general manager, Alexander Steinforth, Germany is an increasingly vital market for the NFL, reflecting a growing enthusiasm for American football. Steinforth stated, “Germany has shown continuous growth in fandom and passion for the game. After four successful international games in Munich and Frankfurt, we’re excited to have the Colts as the designated team for our first regular-season game in Berlin. This city has a rich football history and illustrates the league’s commitment to international expansion.”
The announcement designating Berlin as a host city was made in December. Colts owner Jim Irsay expressed pride in the team’s involvement, stating, “The NFL is making history in Berlin, and the Colts are honored to be part of this momentous event in such a historic city. The NFL has established itself as a global brand, and we look forward to promoting American football in Germany, expanding Colts Nation’s presence worldwide. This event also opens new avenues for our local Indiana partners to connect with businesses and fans in Germany.”
For the 2025 season, the NFL intends to host up to eight regular-season games internationally. This includes two games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London and one at the renowned Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. The New York Jets and Cleveland Browns have been designated to play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Additionally, the Jacksonville Jaguars will be returning to Wembley Stadium for a “home” game.
Historically, the NFL has conducted 55 regular-season games globally, with cities such as London, Munich, Frankfurt, São Paulo, Mexico City, and Toronto serving as hosts. The Colts have previously participated in two international regular-season games, once in London and once in Frankfurt, reflecting their evolving presence on the global stage.
