Who is Pam Bondi, Trump’s choice for attorney general? The ex-prosecutor has strong ties to Trump.

WASHINGTON — Pam Bondi, nominee for leadership of the Justice Department and a close associate of Donald Trump, underwent intense scrutiny from legislators on the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding her allegiance to the president-elect. Trump has indicated an intention to use the department to pay back perceived political rivals. Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, assured senators that her approach as the nation’s top federal law enforcement official would be free from political bias, yet she stopped short of excluding the possibility of investigations involving Trump’s critics.

Should she gain confirmation, particularly after the department implicated Trump in multiple criminal cases, Bondi would find herself under considerable observation as a member of Trump’s cabinet. Her longstanding association with Trump positions her as a prominent defender, consistently appearing on news platforms to advocate on his behalf during various legal challenges.

During a 2023 interview, Bondi remarked on the integrity of the Department of Justice, declaring that “the bad ones” among prosecutors would be held accountable. In response to repeated inquiries from Democratic lawmakers regarding the potential independence of the Justice Department from White House influence, Bondi asserted that “no one should be prosecuted for political purposes.” However, she declined to clarify her course of action if instructed by the president to withdraw a case or whether she would look into Jack Smith, the special counsel overseeing Trump’s charges.

Bondi expressed her support for Trump last year during his legal proceedings related to hush money payments. Following Trump’s recent conviction on 34 felony counts in that trial, she lamented the erosion of trust in the justice system, stating that “the American people see through it.” On a radio program in August, she made derogatory remarks about special counsel Jack Smith, likening him to “a rabid dog” after he filed new charges against Trump during the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding immunity for sitting presidents.

As the first female attorney general in Florida, Bondi was elected in 2010, defeating her opponent with the backing of notable figures, including former Governor Sarah Palin. During her tenure, she was involved in significant legal battles, including a multi-state challenge to President Obama’s healthcare reforms, which ultimately were upheld by the Supreme Court. She also opposed Florida’s same-sex marriage ban, asserting the marriage definition should be a state issue. One of her primary focuses was combating pill mills tied to the opioid crisis that affected not just Florida, but the entire nation.

Bondi has faced past scrutiny due to allegations surrounding a political contribution solicited from Trump in 2013 while her office was considering legal action against Trump University. Following a $25,000 donation from Trump, Bondi’s office decided against pursuing the lawsuit, citing a lack of sufficient evidence. Both Trump and Bondi have denied any wrongdoing; however, the situation attracted ethical inquiries, which a state commission ultimately dismissed, citing insufficient evidence for bribery claims.

Before her role as attorney general, Bondi spent nearly two decades as a prosecutor in Hillsborough County, tackling a wide range of criminal cases. Between 2019 and 2024, she also engaged in lobbying work for numerous corporations, including Amazon and Uber, raising alarms among Democrats about potential conflicts of interest should she be confirmed in her current position.

In addition to her lobbying roles, Bondi has been involved with the America First Policy Institute, where she participated in significant legal advocacy, including supporting a case involving a high school football coach dismissed for praying on the field.

Bondi played a key role in Trump’s first impeachment trial, where she defended him against accusations of misconduct related to his communications with Ukraine regarding President Biden’s family. Her efforts were aimed at shaping the White House’s narrative around the impeachment proceedings, which Trump characterized as unfounded.

Following the 2020 presidential election, Bondi was a prominent supporter of challenging the results, claiming evidence of electoral mismanagement in Pennsylvania. When pressed on whether Trump lost the election, she affirmed Biden’s presidency but suggested suspicious activities occurred during voting. At a press conference, alongside attorney Rudy Giuliani, Bondi alleged that Republican poll watchers faced undue restrictions in their oversight roles.

With her nomination unfolding amidst this backdrop of controversy, Bondi’s confirmation hearing reflects broader concerns about the politicization of the Justice Department and the intersection of legal accountability and political alliances within Trump’s era.
