KENT, Ohio — Markhi Strickland showcased a strong performance with 18 points, leading Western Michigan to a 94-83 victory over Kent State on Tuesday night, thus breaking an eight-game losing streak.
Strickland was efficient, hitting 6 of 9 attempts from the field and converting 6 of 10 at the free-throw line for the Broncos, who now hold a record of 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-American Conference. Javaughn Hannah contributed significantly to the win with 17 points and five rebounds. Chansey Willis Jr. added 16 points, going 3 for 9 from the field and 1 for 4 from beyond the arc, while also making 9 out of 12 free throws. His performance included seven assists, making him a vital part of the Broncos’ offense.
On the other side, the Golden Flashes were led by Jalen Sullinger, who had an impressive outing with 32 points, including eight 3-point baskets. Cli’Ron Hornbeak played a key role as well, chipping in 17 points along with a couple of steals. Delrecco Gillespie also had a solid performance, finishing with 10 points and nearly a double-double, collecting nine rebounds.
Western Michigan established an early advantage, going on a 14-2 run that propelled them to a 41-30 lead in the first half. They maintained their momentum and entered halftime ahead 46-40, thanks in part to Strickland’s nine points in the opening period. The decisive moment came in the second half when Willis’s layup at the 7:49 mark put Western Michigan ahead 73-71, a lead they would not relinquish.
Both squads are set to return to action on Saturday; Western Michigan will welcome Buffalo while Kent State will face Miami (Ohio) at home.
