Mariners acquire INF Miles Mastrobuoni from Cubs for monetary compensation

The Seattle Mariners have added infielder Miles Mastrobuoni to their roster in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, acquiring him for a cash consideration on Tuesday.

Mastrobuoni, who is 29 years old, struggled at the plate last season, finishing with a batting average of .194 and driving in four runs across 50 games played for the Cubs.

Versatile on the field, he is capable of playing multiple positions including second base, third base, shortstop, and various corner outfield spots.

His designation for assignment came after the Cubs made a roster move to bring in reliever Matt Festa last Thursday.

In a corresponding move, the Mariners designated catcher Nick Raposo for assignment to clear a spot in their 40-man roster for Mastrobuoni. Raposo, age 26, had previously been acquired off waivers from Toronto in December.

Mastrobuoni made his major league debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022 and has since appeared in 118 games, boasting a career batting average of .219, with one home run, nine runs batted in, and 16 stolen bases.

This acquisition marks a strategic move for the Mariners as they look to enhance their roster depth heading into the forthcoming season.
