Montreal Canadiens forward Emil Heineman is anticipated to be sidelined for about three to four weeks following an incident where he was struck by a vehicle while walking in downtown Salt Lake City. This unfortunate event occurred a day prior to the Canadiens’ match against the Utah Hockey Club.
On Tuesday, the team confirmed that the 23-year-old Swedish athlete is dealing with an upper-body injury resulting from this pedestrian collision. The Canadiens were set to compete against Utah later that evening.
According to a statement from Salt Lake City police, a 911 call was made around three in the afternoon on Monday. Officers responded to the reported location, near 200 East 500 South. However, they were unable to locate either the pedestrian involved or the individual who reported the accident initially. It was only later in the evening that police received information from a nearby establishment that had details likely relating to the incident.
After confirming Heineman’s identity, police noted that he did not exhibit any significant injuries and was receiving care from the Canadiens’ medical team. At this time, the specifics of his injury have not been disclosed.
Police have identified all individuals involved in the accident and have stated that they are not able to provide further details at this moment. The Utah Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the matter.
This marks Heineman’s first complete season in the NHL, where he has accrued 17 points over 41 games for the Canadiens. Originally hailing from Leksand, Sweden, Heineman was selected in the second round of the 2020 draft by Florida, before being traded to Calgary in 2021 and then to Montreal in 2022.
Please note, the information in this article has been amended to clarify that Heineman was drafted in 2020, not 2000.
