LONDON — On Tuesday, Maro Itoje was named as the new captain of England’s rugby team for the upcoming Six Nations tournament. He succeeds Jamie George in this leadership role.
At 30 years old, Itoje steps into this position for the first time, although he has previously filled in for George when the hooker was substituted during matches.
Jamie George, who has captained the team since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, has been moved to the role of vice-captain and will serve alongside Ellis Genge.
Itoje brings significant experience to his new captaincy, having earned 88 international caps and also having been named the captain of the Saracens for the current season, a position he took over from George.
England’s head coach Steve Borthwick praised Itoje as “a calm, influential leader,” highlighting his commitment to maintaining high standards within the team and his ability to inspire his teammates. Borthwick believes that Itoje’s strong relationships with both the squad and coaching staff, paired with his leadership experience at Saracens, make him the right fit for the role.
As part of the preparations for the Six Nations, Borthwick has selected a squad of 36 players, including No. 8 Tom Willis. However, the squad has notable absences, including seasoned prop Dan Cole and scrumhalf Ben Spencer.
