Harden’s dominant third quarter propels Clippers to victory over Heat, 109-98

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — James Harden played a pivotal role in leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a 109-98 victory over the Miami Heat on Monday night, scoring 13 of his 26 points during a pivotal third quarter. This win ended a two-game losing streak for the Clippers, who had not played in five days due to the postponement of their scheduled game over the weekend, which was cancelled due to devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area. As a tribute, fans received white towels inscribed with “LA Strong” alongside an outline of California in blue.

Norman Powell proved to be the top scorer for the Clippers with an impressive 29 points, and Ivica Zubac contributed significantly with a season-high 20 rebounds along with 21 points, marking his 25th double-double this season. Harden also facilitated well, recording 11 assists throughout the match.

On the other hand, the Heat were led by Tyler Herro, who scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Miami’s three-game winning streak came to an end with this loss, although Kel’el Ware provided a solid bench performance, finishing with 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

In terms of team news, the Heat were without center Bam Adebayo, who missed the game due to lower back pain resulting from a fall during a previous match against Portland. Kevin Love started in Adebayo’s absence and made an impact with three 3-pointers in the opening quarter.

For the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard had a modest output, contributing six points on 3-of-9 shooting along with five rebounds in 21 minutes. This was Leonard’s third game back from injury, and he did not take the court in the fourth quarter. Clippers coach Tyronn Lue confirmed that Leonard’s playing time will continue to be monitored as he works on regaining his form.

A crucial moment in the game came during the third quarter when the Clippers surged ahead by outscoring the Heat 36-20, taking a 79-68 lead. They demonstrated their shooting prowess with six successful 3-pointers—three from Harden and three from Powell. Harden was instrumental in this stretch, scoring eight consecutive points that helped the Clippers secure the lead.

Following this game, the Heat will continue their six-game road trip with a matchup against the Lakers on Wednesday night, while the Clippers will face off against the Brooklyn Nets on the same evening.
