Lions gear up to face the Commanders, shifting focus from a rematch with the Rams or Vikings

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions took advantage of a long weekend, relishing their position as the top seed in the NFC and inching closer to a potential Super Bowl appearance. The Lions enjoyed a break, which is invaluable as they do not need to win a game in order to secure their place in the upcoming divisional round of the playoffs.

“The statistics indicate that it’s one less game you have to win to reach your ultimate goal,” remarked Detroit coach Dan Campbell. This playoff advantage is especially crucial as the Lions (15-2) prepare for their matchup against the Washington Commanders (13-5) on Saturday night, with hopes of leveraging the home-field advantage.

A recent victory by Washington over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers also ensured that the Lions would avoid facing the Los Angeles Rams, led by Matthew Stafford, or a third encounter with the NFC North rival, Minnesota Vikings. Campbell expressed his enthusiasm over the unfamiliar matchup with the Commanders.

Washington comes into this game with momentum, having won five consecutive games, largely due to dramatic last-minute plays. However, they are set to face a different challenge against Detroit, which is known for its explosive performance both on the ground and through the air.

“They present a lot of challenges,” said Washington coach Dan Quinn. He pointed out the Lions’ depth at wide receiver, a dynamic quarterback, and a strong offensive line, all of which will force Washington to be at their best. “We’re definitely going to have to work hard to compete,” he added.

Washington’s recent victory, which eliminated the Buccaneers—one of the few teams to have defeated Detroit during the regular season—has added to the stakes of this upcoming game. Detroit, while favored by 8.5 points according to BetMGM Sportsbook, isn’t underestimating Washington, especially with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels leading the charge.

“We know we have a formidable opponent,” Campbell acknowledged. “They’ve got an exciting quarterback, and their coaching and overall team effort seem to be clicking right now. We need to be prepared.”

This showdown will feature two potential candidates for the NFL Coach of the Year award. Campbell recognizes the competitive spirit Quinn brings after having faced him during various stages of their coaching careers. Quinn, who successfully coached the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 until partway through the 2020 season, has earned respect from Campbell, especially for how he leads his teams with competitiveness and integrity.

While Campbell minimized the importance of the bye week for his injury-ridden squad, it undeniably offers a chance for players to recover. Running back David Montgomery is expected to return from a knee injury that many believed could end his season, providing the Lions with a much-needed boost alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, creating a formidable duo in the backfield.

Montgomery accumulated 1,116 yards and scored 12 touchdowns throughout the season, the most recent performance occurring against the Bills a month ago. “He’s a critical part of our team, a true bell cow,” Campbell explained. “His presence is essential as we prepare for this game, and we’re excited to have him back on the field.”

With the playoffs on the line, both teams are bracing for a fiercely competitive battle that promises to showcase their strengths and strategies.
